We are a group of folks who want to make a difference in our community by organizing events centred around art and climate justice! We’re based in New Westminster, BC, and have come together because we’re passionate about planting the seeds for a thriving and resilient community.
The Homegrown Pigeon Society is on the unceded territory of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking peoples whose history colonialism has tried to erase from this land. Hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ is the downriver dialect of Halkomelem which shows the connection between language and place. We strive to be in good relationship with both the land and the First Nation’s whose land we are on.
Colonialism is a global process that disconnects people with their ecosystems, with each other, and with themselves. We work to create opportunities to restore that connection and to find joy, learning, and community through our events and activities.
In today's world, people are feeling increasingly lonely and disconnected from their communities. In the face of oppressive structures which try to keep us apart, one of the most powerful things we can do is to form connections, take care of each other, and have fun together! By building kinship with our neighbours, and with the ecosystems around us, we offer opportunities for residents of New West to connect. Through community, we can build resiliency, together.
In climate activism, a lot of focus can be placed on grief, pain, and fear. Though these emotions are useful, without balance, they drag people down. Our worries and fears show that we care, and the other half of that care is love. We believe that there is a place for fun and gratification in this work, and want to create that space for joy to flourish. We act from love; we love this place where we live and we want to protect it and see it thrive. That is something that deserves celebration, in the face of it all!
We want to make climate education accessible and fun! No matter how much experience or knowledge you have in this area, your perspective is valued. This learning is collaborative- everyone has something to bring to the table! By sharing personal experiences and expertise, as well as through art and storytelling, we aim to create interactive learning opportunities about the climate crisis. We want to provide a space for folks to share knowledge and form resilient bonds with one another.
We go out and get things done together, build community, and have fun while we do it. We’re just getting started, but some ideas include: removing invasive species, makeshift community gardens, community events in neighborhoods underserved by the city- you name it! Do you have an idea related to art and climate justice that you want to see in New West? Get involved! We’d love to hear from you!
We want to focus our efforts on communities and neighborhoods in New West which are not already well-served. As an organization, we’re focused on providing opportunities for everyone to connect to each other and the land!
Accessibility is crucial to us as a group! We strive to make our events as accessible as possible, as well as being a member of our organization itself- no specific level of involvement is required, only as much as your time & energy allows.
